  New Company Aims To Deliver Global Open Standards for Internet-Based Applications And Infrastructure Software In The Japanese Market
 
TOKYO, Japan - December 6, 2000 -- Phone.com Japan K.K, a leading provider of wireless Internet infrastructure and application software, and Software.com Japan Ltd., a leading developer of carrier-scale Internet infrastructure software for communications service providers, announced today that they have established Openwave Systems Japan K.K. (Based in Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, CEO: Trung Mai). The new company brings together industry leadership and product innovation to deliver open Internet-based communication infrastructure software and applications in the Japanese market. The new company has been established as a consequence of the merger of California-based companies Phone.com, Inc. and Software.com, Inc. resulting in the launch of Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:OPWV), which was announced on November 21.

Trung Mai, former CEO of Software.com Japan Ltd, and Kazuhiko Ishii, former president of Phone.com Japan K.K, have become CEO and COO, respectively, of the newly merged company. Openwave Systems Japan K.K. plans to double the number of employees by end of next year for further business expansions.

Openwave Systems Japan K.K. will gradually integrate product offerings of Phone.com and Software.com and develop next-generation technologies that meet the needs of the world's fastest growing mobile Internet market in Japan. In addition, the company will establish an R&D facility in Japan to develop global open standard products and technologies through close collaborations with the company's core customers, namely, communications service providers, such as wireless network operators, wireline carriers, Internet Service Providers (ISP's), portals and broadband network providers, as well as software developer partners.
