OPENWAVE ANNOUNCES SYNCML SUPPORT FOR OPENWAVE SYNCHRONIZATION PLATFORM

SyncML Open Standard to Enable Software and Device Manufacturer Interoperability as well as Universal Synchronization

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - December 7, 2000 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the combination of Phone.com and Software.com, today announced its commitment to supporting and implementing the SyncML open standard in the next version of Openwave™ leading synchronization software for mobile devices, with PIMs and PCs. By leveraging the SyncML protocol, Openwave will empower users to locally and wirelessly synchronize data among SyncML-compliant devices and data services such as enterprise and mobile portals.

SyncML, the first open standard focused on synchronization of data with any device, anytime, anywhere, will simplify and streamline the synchronization process by using XML as the common mark-up language. In the past, data synchronization has operated within a number of restrictions: Existing sync technology has been based on a variety of proprietary protocols that limit interoperability among different devices and systems. "What SyncML as an open standard means, bottom line, is that users will have ubiquitous access to updated and consistent data, applications and services from all compatible wireless and personal information management devices," said Andrew Wyatt, group vice president of Synchronization Products at Openwave Systems Inc. "Openwave's support of this open standard, as well as our plans to integrate it into our sync platform and build on it in the future, reflects our commitment to the continued technological growth and advancement of all Openwave products and the industry at large."

"The growing population of mobile professionals, and their dependency on carrying more than one mobile device, is creating opportunities for vendors delivering solutions that bridge and synchronize PIM and business data between the variety of handheld device types in the field," said Kevin Burden, program manager, Smart Handheld Devices, IDC. "Openwave is taking the first step in addressing this industry need with its synchronization products."
