OPENWAVE ANNOUNCES GENERAL AVAILABILITY OF MOBILE ACCESS GATEWAY RELEASE 5.0

Latest Release Establishes Smooth Transition to Next Generation Mobile Internet Services

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - July 11, 2001 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based communications infrastructure software and applications, today announced general availability of the fifth generation of the Openwave™ Mobile Access Gateway. The Openwave Mobile Access Gateway, along with the recently announced fifth generation Openwave Mobile Browser, enables communications service providers (CSPs) to dramatically improve user experience and deliver proven mobile services that consumers want. By licensing the Mobile Access Gateway, Openwave provides operators the opportunity to offer data services, increasing minutes of use and therefore increasing revenue. The gateway has been built using the most innovative and mature mobile Internet technology available, and is designed to support Next Generation wireless Internet services, such as General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), and industry standards and initiatives, such as the anticipated WAP 2.0 standard and the GSM Association’s recently announced M-Services Guidelines (please see separate release dated June 13th, 2001). With GPRS support, advanced billing features, and support for the ground-breaking Openwave Browser release 5.0, the Mobile Access Gateway enables Next Generation services on today's 2G and 2.5G networks, with a clear evolution path for expanding these features over 3G networks in the future.

Openwave is known as a leading innovator for mobile Internet technology. The latest version of the Openwave Mobile Access Gateway provides new features to operators and developers that enable powerful, purposeful applications tailored to subscriber needs. For example, WAP push technology will allow subscribers to receive time-sensitive information and immediately take action while on-the-go.

“Openwave’s Mobile Access Gateway is key for us in providing forward-thinking WAP solutions, while enabling operators to monetize their current networks,” said Mechthild Behrens, vice president, Customer Access and Application Platforms of Siemens Information and Communication Mobile. “The Mobile Access Gateway is an essential part of successful packet-based mobile internet services.”

As a supporter of the GSM Association’s M-Services Initiative, Openwave is helping drive adoption of the mobile Internet by delivering a dramatically improved user experience through fifth generation technologies in both the Mobile Access Gateway and the Mobile Browser, allowing operators to quickly deploy more compelling services. The Mobile Access Gateway and Mobile Browser are compliant with the GSM Association’s M-Services Guidelines, and while they operate with today’s networks, are designed to leverage 2.5G and 3G networks and handsets.

As a co-founder and key contributor to the WAP Forum, Openwave is well positioned to help operators transition smoothly from WAP 1.x to the forthcoming WAP 2.0 standard. The Openwave Mobile Access Gateway provides the features and functionality needed to begin the transition now – allowing operators to test and perfect Next Generation features on today’s networks. These features allow operators to bill per event, provide customized service features to groups of subscribers, and tailor content services based on network capabilities.

“Our Mobile Access Gateway Release 5 is also the beginning of a comprehensive strategy to smoothly transition operators from WAP 1.x to WAP 2.0,” said Richard McConnell, group vice president of Mobile Services Infrastructure for Openwave. “Our primary goal is to see our carrier customers succeed by aiding them in accelerating adoption of the mobile Internet. We believe that our focus on increased usability for the subscriber and increased ARPU for our customers’ current networks will help both the carriers and mobile handset manufacturers meet the goal of shipping more than 10 million M-Services-compliant handset models by this Christmas.”
