OPENWAVE AND BT WIRELESS' GENIE SIGN UNIFIED MESSAGING DEAL

Genie's Customers Enjoy Convenience of Openwave-powered Unified Messaging

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. and LONDON - July 23, 2001 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based communication infrastructure software and applications, and Genie, the mobile Internet division of BT Wireless and one of the United Kingdom’s leading mobile Internet services, announced that the two companies have signed a contract for Openwave’s Unified Messaging solution. Genie has become an application service provider for Openwave’s Unified Messaging and is delivering the service to its sister company BT Cellnet also a part of the BT Wireless family. This announcement further extends Openwave’s relationship with BT Wireless. BT Wireless currently offers wireless Internet services based upon the Openwave™ Services OS™ platform, utilizing the Openwave Mobile Access Gateway, email and portal functionality. In addition, Genie recently selected the Openwave Mobile Browser WAP edition as their browser-of-choice for their handset suppliers and developers.

Genie’s first deployment of the Openwave™ Unified Messaging solution licensed by Genie is through BT Cellnet’s ConnectedMail communication service, launched last month. ConnectedMail is being offered to United Kingdom (UK)-based businesses as a part of its Connected portal for the small-to-medium enterprise (SME).

ConnectedMail subscribers are the first users of the Openwave Unified Messaging service in Europe. With the new service, subscribers are able to greatly simplify their communications by managing popular forms of messaging in a single inbox, while benefiting from the freedom to reply to messages using either electronic text or verbal communication. ConnectedMail Unified Messaging service provides each subscriber with a single inbox to receive his or her voicemail, email messages and faxes through either an Internet-enabled mobile phone, PDA or personal computer.

“The primary goal of our mobile portal is to provide our customers with rich, compelling and easy-to-use mobile data services,” said Kent Thexton, president of Genie. “Openwave has helped Genie meet that goal by enabling BT Cellnet to become the first wireless network operator to offer their Unified Messaging services in the UK. We chose Openwave because they have the only carrier class IP-based UM solution that can leverage our current investment, as we work towards an aggressive roll-out plan for next generation services over our evolving network infrastructure. Genie recognizes the power of open IP-based messaging applied to all message types and is dedicated to providing the right solution today along with comprehensive migration for tomorrow’s networks.”

“Working with Genie to deliver Unified Messaging gives Genie’s European subscribers the breakthrough ability to stay connected with the information that is most important to them and to manage all their messages and communications from whichever device is most convenient—whether it be their computers, Internet-enabled mobile phones or traditional phones,” said Marc Linden, group vice president at Openwave. “We are excited to be working with Genie as it becomes one of the most comprehensive and robust communications portals available.”

Built on open architecture, the Openwave Services OS is a modular suite of open, IP-based mobile Internet software comprised of three interoperable product categories: Mobile Services Infrastructure, Platform Services and Communications Services. Openwave’s Unified Messaging is a fundamental component of the Communications Services layer, which enables mobile operators to rapidly create and deploy new revenue-generating services, while providing mobile subscribers with a more compelling, personalized, easy-to-use, and personalized mobile Internet experience. By including Openwave’s Unified Messaging solution within its commercial offering, Genie anticipates enhancing the usability of the mobile portal.
