OPENWAVE CREATES COO AND CTO POSITIONS- KEY TO GROWTH STRATEGY

Kevin Kennedy Joins as COO, John MacFarlane Becomes CTO

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - August 28, 2001 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based communication infrastructure software and applications, today announced the creation of two strategic leadership positions; the posts of Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Kevin Kennedy, former senior vice president of Cisco Systems Service Provider Line of Business and Software Technologies Division, joins Openwave today as COO and John MacFarlane, Openwave’s executive vice president will now lead the office of CTO.“

These newly created leadership positions are instrumental in augmenting our team and positioning Openwave for the next level,” said Don Listwin, president and CEO of Openwave. “Kevin’s balance of strategy and operations excellence is unmatched in the market. His insight, integrity, intelligence and drive make him an excellent leader. John MacFarlane is uniquely qualified for the strategic role of CTO. His track record of identifying and capitalizing on new technology opportunities is outstanding.

“In making my decision to join Openwave I looked at the future of the market and the fact that software and services are key growth areas. Telecommunications companies and service providers are looking for ways to extract value from the investments they have already made in infrastructure and equipment. Internet data centers and mobile software and the intersection of those two will offer service providers the business solutions they need,” said Kevin Kennedy, COO of Openwave. “I am excited about joining Openwave because the company has the technology, leadership and momentum to be able to take advantage of this market opportunity.“

“I am very excited to take on this new position as CTO and to have the opportunity to focus on establishing the technical vision for the company and to communicate this vision to our customers, employees, ecosystem partners and shareholders worldwide,” said John MacFarlane, CTO for Openwave. “I am also looking forward to working closely with Kevin in the years to come. He has demonstrated an expertise to successfully grow businesses in emerging markets and brings with him a skill set that will further enable us to drive Openwave market share and ensure our customers’ success.”
