TELEFONICA MOVILES AND OPENWAVE DEVELOP WORLDWIDE STRATEGIC MOBILE INTERNET COLLABORATION

Both companies plan to jointly develop a Competence Center to drive the creation of new products and services and consumer adoption of the mobile Internet

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - September 19, 2001 -- Telefónica Móviles, one of the leading Mobile Operators worldwide, and Openwave (Nasdaq: OPWV), the global leader of Open IP-based communication infrastructure, software and applications, yesterday agreed to collaborate to leverage the experiences and knowledge of both companies in the mobile Internet world.

This cooperation will allow Telefónica Móviles to gain access to Openwave’s technology, software and products in order to develop Mobile Internet services, which could be used for the operators of the Telefónica Móviles international group. Openwave will reinforce its product offer and leadership through this strategic and commercial collaboration with one of the world’s major Mobile Telephone companies.

Openwave will provide and integrate into Telefónica Móviles networks worldwide, a series of products that Telefónica Móviles will use for the development of their Mobile Internet Services. Openwave’s technology will allow the enrichment and consolidation of services such as WAP access, downloading of tones, images and calendar, location applications and e-mail accessible from mobile phone, amongst others. This cooperation demonstrates both companies’ commitment to the GSM Association’s M-Services initiative that was created to accelerate deployment and adoption of mobile Internet services within the GSM community. Telefónica Móviles will strengthen its leadership position in the development and offer of new innovative mobile Internet services.

The companies plan to set up a Competence Center in Madrid, exclusively dedicated to test and enhance Openwave’s products to meet Telefónica Móviles requirements, to experiment with new technologies and share experiences in order to improve the products. The two companies intend to contribute their technological capacity and manpower to this Competence Center to obtain the maximum benefit from this collaboration.

“At Openwave, we recognize that we must work closely with our customers to deliver market-leading technologies, and to identify industry best practices to maximize the success of our customers and the mobile Internet. This relationship with Telefónica Móviles exemplifies Openwave’s dedication to the GSM Association’s M-Services initiative, ” said Mike Mulica, senior vice president, Office of Customer Operations for Openwave. “We look forward to working closely with Telefónica Móviles to assist in promoting the growth of their Internet services.”

Ignacio Aller, chief technology officer of Telefónica Móviles, affirmed that “with this accord, Telefónica Móviles takes a determined step towards establishing a strong relationship with one of the Technological leaders in Mobile Internet, which places us in a situation to offer our clients the most advanced services in the variety of sectors in which we operate.”
