OPENWAVE POWERS STRATEGIC MESSAGING PLATFORM FOR DEUTSCHE TELEKOM T-NETBOX

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - October 24, 2001 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based communications infrastructure software and applications, today announced that it is providing Deutsche Telekom AG with a strategic messaging platform for its Unified Messaging solution. Deutsche Telekom will use Openwave's Internet messaging server, Openwave™ Email Mx, to provide one million private and business users with email and value-added services. These services will also be available to T-NetBox wholesale and retail customers. The T-NetBox is Deutsche Telekom's Voice Mail service for fixed line customers.

Among the first value-added services that have already been implemented is the unified messaging service for the T-NetBox - a unified messaging mailbox that can receive voice, fax, email and multimedia news. It can be accessed via wireline or mobile phones, web browser or voice portal.

"Openwave's proven history, footprint and track record made them an obvious choice for our messaging platform. The decisive factors were Email Mx's scalability, cost-effectiveness, level of performance and reliability," said Dr. Robert Bieshaar, messaging services product marketing at Deutsche Telekom's Value-Added Services Division. "We believe unified messaging is the future of messaging, and Openwave is providing the foundation."

"The future of communications technologies lies in value-added services that provide the user with both enhanced functionality and ease-of-use, as well as offering the service provider new sources of revenue," says Michael Mulica, senior vice president of worldwide operations for Openwave. "We are delighted that Deutsche Telekom has chosen the Openwave messaging platform. As a high caliber service provider, Deutsche Telekom understands that Openwave's Services OS offers a foundation for success today and unmatched enhanceability for tomorrow."

The Openwave™ Services OS™ is a suite of open, IP-based mobile Internet software. Services OS enables mobile operators to rapidly create and deploy new revenue-generating services while providing mobile subscribers with a more compelling, easy-to-use, and personalized mobile Internet experience. The Services OS is a modular software suite comprised of three interoperable product categories: Mobile Services Infrastructure, consisting of Openwave gateway and browser products; Platform Services, which include core technologies such as directory, portal, and provisioning software as well as location, notification and synchronization software that bring intelligence to the network; and Communication Services, which include Openwave email, mobile email, and unified messaging, as well as third-party developer applications.

As the market leader for the mobile Internet, Openwave software has already been deployed in more than 70 percent of the world's Internet-enabled phones. Additionally, components of the Services OS have been deployed today by mobile operators who service more than 50 percent of the world's mobile subscribers.
