  OPENWAVE ANNOUNCES COMPREHENSIVE TOOL SET FOR APPLICATION DEVELOPERS
  

  Openwave's Software Developer Tools Simplify the Development Process and Help Developers create WAP, M-Services and XHTML applications
 
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - November 7, 2001 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based communication infrastructure software and applications, today announced its strategy to promote the growth of the mobile Internet and provide an evolutionary software development environment with the introduction of three new developer tools supporting the Openwave™ Mobile Browser, which is in over 100 million shipped handsets. The new tools include Openwave™ SDK WAP Edition 5.0, Openwave™ SDK 5.1 Preview and Openwave™ Usability Interface—all are designed to support the GSM Association’s Mobile Services (M-Services) initiative. The new software developer tools are open and standards-based and are all designed to help simplify the development process and reduce overall costs.

Openwave SDK WAP Edition 5.0 features an integrated development environment (IDE), providing developers a complete set of tools to create, test, and debug content for today’s M-Services devices, featuring a graphical user interface (GUI) and downloadable content. A language sensitive editor minimizes the time it takes to create and validate new content, while the simulator gives developers the most faithful reproduction of the actual user environment as possible and is based on phones such as the recently released Siemens S45 with GPRS and GUI support.

Openwave SDK 5.1 Preview extends SDK WAP Edition 5.0 with support for XHTML Mobile Profile and Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) technology. Developers can use Openwave SDK 5.1 Preview today to experiment with application development for the next generation of converged standards – including the anticipated WAP 2.0 specification.

Openwave Usability Interface is designed to allow developers to write once and have content dynamically optimized at runtime for Openwave and Nokia browsers. Openwave Usability Interface includes a choice of programming front-ends—Java, WML-based tags, and XHTML-based tags—providing flexibility and preserving developers’ existing programming environments.

Through Openwave Usability Interface’s translation capabilities, developers can write applications using XHTML-based tags and display those applications on today’s WML-based browsers. This capability minimizes the number of markup languages that need to be supported in parallel and eases the transition to XHTML Mobile Profile and WAP 2.0.
