KDDI ADOPTS OPENWAVE'S WAP 2.0-BASED TOTAL SOLUTION FOR ITS EZWEB MOBILE INTERNET SERVICE

Openwave Takes User Experience to Next Level with New Browser, New SDK and Service Platform for Advanced Networks

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - November 12, 2001 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), today announced that the company has delivered a mobile Internet solution based on WAP 2.0 to KDDI Corporation (Head office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, President: Tadashi Onodera) for the deployment of its next generation au service expected to launch in December. The WAP 2.0 specification is the next step in the evolution of the mobile Internet, enabling operators such as KDDI to take advantage of advanced networks and new devices with enhanced graphical user interfaces. As part of its end-to-end solution supporting WAP 2.0, Openwave also announced the availability of Openwave™ Mobile Browser, Universal Edition and Openwave™ SDK, Universal Edition. KDDI’s deployment represents the world’s first commercial service to be based on Openwave’s implementation of the WAP 2.0 specifications.

The Openwave services platform features a standards-based open architecture that allows KDDI to move towards 3G networks while preserving KDDI’s existing investments in HDML content and 2.5G infrastructure through backward compatibility. The infrastructure facilitates the current EZweb offering while concurrently providing the new service-of-choice to KDDI Group’s 8.7 million subscribers. Additionally, the Openwave solution allows KDDI to improve its existing mobile Internet offering by enriching the user’s experience through increased exposure to a broader range of content and services.

“WAP 2.0 is the critical platform technology for us to deliver our next-generation wireless multimedia service, ” said Ikuyoshi Inoue, senior general manager, Service & Product Planning Division at KDDI Corporation. “Openwave has offered us the WAP 2.0-based solution, enabling us to launch the service immediately.”

By adopting the WAP 2.0 specifications that were announced in August 2001, KDDI’s EZweb service has evolved into an open, multi-platform environment that opens the doors for subscribers to a larger world of mobile Internet services including location-based content and downloadable movie clips. A host of over 52 thousand additional mobile web sites and services are now easily accessible to EZweb subscribers. Both the Openwave Mobile Browser, Universal Edition and the Openwave SDK Universal Edition have made it possible for KDDI to expand its commercial offering by enabling the access of mobile web sites previously unavailable to its subscribers.

“au’s next-generation service represents a landmark service in the most advanced mobile Internet market in the world,” said Arata Hirao, general manager of Openwave Japan. “We are honored to be an integral part of KDDI’s efforts in pioneering next generation mobile Internet services.”

To coincide with KDDI’s launch, Openwave is releasing to developers in Japan the Openwave SDK Universal Edition, which supports the anticipated WAP 2.0 standards. WAP 2.0 represents the convergence of WAP & W3C standards, bringing PC Internet standards (XHTML, HTTP, TCP/IP, and TLS) to the mobile Internet. The Openwave software development kit (SDK) provides support for content development with XHTML Mobile Profile and cascading style sheets (CSS) and with legacy mobile standards (HDML, cHTML, and WML).

Openwave Mobile Browser Universal Edition facilitates backward compatibility, enabling long-time subscribers to continue to enjoy their favorite mobile Web sites and services while giving users access to tens of thousands additional sites. Openwave Mobile Browser Universal Edition is the first XHTML Mobile Profile browser to ship commercially supporting the anticipated WAP 2.0 environment. The Openwave Mobile Browser family provides a consistent platform for developers to create applications across multiple devices and networks. Openwave Mobile Browsers can be found today in over 166 million handsets shipped worldwide.
