OPENWAVE IS CHOSEN BY TIM FOR LAUNCH OF FIRST M-SERVICES ROLLOUT IN EUROPE

M-Services Rollout with GPRS Delivers Compelling Services and Dramatically Improved User Experience

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - November 12, 2001 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based communication infrastructure software and applications, today announced that it has extended its commercial relationship with Saritel (Telecom Italia Group) to provide TIM (Telecom Italia Group), key technology for mobile Internet services, compliant with the GSM Association’s Mobile Services (M-Services) guidelines. TIM, one of the leading mobile operators in Europe, will use Openwave’s M-Services suite, which includes Openwave™ Mobile Access Gateway 5.0 and Download Fun. As a result, TIM will be the first GSM operator to offer its customers the benefits of M-Services.

Through this alliance, TIM will provide the GSM Association with tangible support in its goal to offer new multimedia services on GSM and GPRS networks, and supply its customers with intuitive and valuable services. TIM expects to launch these new services in Italy by the Christmas campaign 2001.

“The industry needed a catalyst to launch a new wireless business cycle. With its history of leadership in the GSM industry, TIM plays a strategic role in moving M-Services from a great concept to a reality for their customers,” said Mike Mulica, senior vice president, Office of Customer Operations for Openwave. “Openwave is excited to continue its partnership with an innovative mobile operator such as TIM and we are committed to supporting TIM’s success by delivering the right solution and the right model for mobile operators and content providers to enhance their offerings and build their business.”

“We are launching M-Services as a first step into a new era of the mobile business,” said Mauro Sentinelli, managing director of TIM. “After driving the success of SMS to the point that it has become a real worldwide customer phenomenon, TIM, number one in Europe, can now give its subscribers a new and rich set of services based on maximum interactivity and ease of use. Thanks to the Openwave platform,” added Sentinelli, “users will be able to send not only text but also graphical images, photographs and musical messages.”

The M-Services initiative was created by the GSM Association to drive adoption and usage of mobile Internet services with the rollout of GPRS. Key components of M-Services include a graphical user interface for mobile handsets and the ability to download rich, multi-media files both of a playful and professional type, like ringtones, wallpapers and other graphical images to the handset for a more personalized user experience. Openwave has worked with handset manufacturers and content partners to provide content that will be attractive to the consumer market, helping to drive mobile Internet usage.

Notes to Editors: Saritel, an authorized reseller of Openwave products and services, is the company that designs, develops and operates the technological platforms for IP-based fixed and mobile network services run by Telecom Italia Group operators.
