OPENWAVE BECOMES SPONSOR AND BOARD MEMBER OF THE OPEN MOBILE ALLIANCE

Openwave Continues Leadership in Standards Development

VANCOUVER, BC - June 12, 2002 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based communication infrastructure software and applications, today announced its sponsorship and full board membership in the Open Mobile Alliance, the formation of which was announced earlier today. The Open Mobile Alliance is composed of nearly 200 member companies representing the world’s leading mobile operators, device and network suppliers, information technology companies and content providers, and intends to foster worldwide growth in the mobile services global market.

The members of the WAP Forum, of which Openwave was a founder, voted Monday to approve the consolidation of efforts of the WAP Forum, the Open Mobile Architecture initiative and the industry working groups that have signed MOU’s announcing their intention to join forces. These working groups include Location Interoperability Forum, MMS IOP Group, SyncML and the Wireless Village initiative, where Openwave is an active member and contributor in each.

The Open Mobile Alliance is designed to be the center of mobile service standardization work, driving the creation of interoperable services across countries, operators and mobile terminals that will meet the needs of the user. To grow the mobile market, the companies supporting the Open Mobile Alliance will work towards stimulating the fast and wide adoption of a variety of new, enhanced mobile information, communication and entertainment services through a number of activities focused on improving interoperability and the overall quality of user experience.

"The Open Mobile Alliance validates the importance of mobile data and will facilitate the development of service enabling standards and end-to-end interoperability to speed mobile operators' successful transition to new revenue generating services," said Richard Wong, senior vice president of Marketing for Openwave. "The combination of industry resources and efforts to standardize a mobile service platform will accelerate the adoption of mobile services by delivering a richer, seamless user experience. Openwave’s leadership in helping to bring this unification to reality has been significant, and we expect to continue our strong leadership in the standards work that lies ahead."

Openwave has been a pioneer in the mobile data industry as well as a key driver and leader in the open standards consolidation effort, serving as one of the early thought leaders. Through this consolidation, Openwave is helping its customers transition to voice and data revenue generating services and accelerate the adoption of mobile services by bringing an enhanced and simpler user experience.
