TELESP CELULAR SELECTS OPENWAVE'S MOBILE INSTANT MESSAGING

Openwave and Telesp Celular Partner to Continue to Drive Mobile Internet Adoption in Brazil

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - July 23, 2002 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based communication infrastructure software and applications, today announced that Telesp Celular (NYSE: TCP), South America's largest wireless Internet carrier, has officially selected Openwave to provide an integrated WAP, SMS, and Web Instant Messaging service to their subscribers. Openwave® Mobile Instant MessagingTM is a fun, easy to use messaging service that lets users build wireless communities, participate in chats, locate and communicate with their buddies using mobile phones, PCs and other wireless devices. Telesp Celular has licensed the Openwave Mobile Instant Messaging solution to work in combination with the latest version of the Openwave Mobile Access Gateway, to provide their wireless subscribers on both their 2G and 2.5G networks with an easy to use communications experience accessible from multiple devices.

Telesp Celular continues to have one of the most rapid mobile Internet adoption rates of any carrier in the world, with over 20% of their subscriber base using wireless data services. Messaging services are emerging as core applications driving mobile data services and are generating over one third of Telesp's current WAP traffic.

The Telesp Celular deployment of Openwave's Mobile Instant Messaging will deliver interactive messaging with always-on capabilities, presence and an intuitive mobile instant messaging experience across various devices. The messaging service will be a key part of the new marketing campaign launched by Telesp Celular that targets the teen market, called "Coisa pra juntar a galera" (a slang term used by teenagers in Brazil meaning "How to get the whole gang together"). Openwave Mobile Instant Messaging will also compliment the messaging services available today for existing legacy SMS, as users can receive and update their buddy lists and modify their status from those devices.

"We selected Openwave's Mobile Instant Messaging technology because it provides an excellent mobile experience for the end user, has proven its success at other carriers in the world, and could be the killer application for the teen market on which we are now focusing," said Luis Avelar, vice president wireless data and wireless internet at Telesp Celular. "By assisting us in delivering innovative IP-based messaging services to end-users through many devices, and thus allowing us to maintain our position as Latin America's leading mobile Internet services provider, Openwave remains a valuable partner to Telesp Celular."

The Openwave Mobile Instant Messaging product, as a component of the Openwave Messaging Services suite, enables carriers to provide subscribers with an excellent communications experience. Openwave's highly scalable messaging product line allows operators to benefit from the standards-based, extensible infrastructure that is easily integrated with existing systems and is compatible with future networks.

"Telesp Celular has an excellent understanding of customer needs. They have realized the importance of mobile instant messaging as a killer mobile application driving end-user adoption in Latin America," said Raul Rodriguez, Openwave's Latin American vice president, "We look forward to partnering with Telesp Celular to establish solutions that will continue to move the industry forward."

Telesp Celular, based in Sao Paulo, Brazil, originally licensed the Openwave Mobile Access Gateway in May 2000 to launch their first mobile data services, and continues to power their wireless networks with the latest version of the Mobile Access Gateway.
