NEW ZEALAND'S XTRA LTD SELECTS OPENWAVE FOR ITS INTERNET MESSAGING SOLUTION

Openwave® Email Mx is the Foundation for Xtra's Next Generation Messaging Services

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. and AUCKLAND, New Zealand - July 31, 2002 -- – Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based communication infrastructure software and applications, today announced that Xtra Limited (“Xtra”), a subsidiary of Telecom New Zealand and the country’s leading Internet service provider has selected Openwave® Email Mx, to power its email service and the next generation of Xtra’s messaging services.

“We are honored that Xtra has selected Openwave to meet Xtra’s messaging needs. Email is increasingly becoming the communication tool of choice for both business and personal use, and a critical part of any Internet service provider’s product range. Our track record proves that Openwave can deliver a platform that has the ability to meet Xtra’s exacting demands for quality, economics and reliability,” said Mike Mulica, senior vice president, Office of Customer Operations for Openwave. “The extension of our relationship with Xtra further reinforces our position in the New Zealand market and is a reflection of the global momentum that is taking place in Internet messaging services”

“Openwave’s messaging software has allowed us to continue meeting the demands of New Zealanders for robust and reliable messaging services. We have seen huge growth in the size and amount of email sent across our network. Over three and a half million messages are sent and received by Xtra’s customers everyday, and there’s no sign that the growth in email traffic is slowing. We’ve invested in Openwave Email Mx to enable us to deliver value to our customers and to develop next generation service that will benefit our end users,” said Shane Ohlin, CIO, Xtra.

Email Mx is the foundation for the Messaging Suite layer of the Openwave Services OS™ suite and extends the flexibility, performance and reliability of desktop Internet access to emerging data, telephone, and wireless markets. Email Mx delivers carrier-class messaging with massive scalability, uncompromised performance and a host of features designed to ensure reliable operation, smooth administration, and integration with existing systems and services. Email Mx also offers end users a seamless environment for messaging across multiple devices combined with the latest features such as Short Message Service (SMS) notification.
