OPENWAVE SHOWCASES LOCATION-BASED SERVICES IN THE THIRD ASIA PACIFIC MOBILE LOCATION SERVICES & CONTENT DELIVERY 2002

Openwave Demonstrates Customized Applications for China's Growing Demand for Location-Based Services

SHANGHAI, People's Republic of China - August 22, 2002 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based communication infrastructure software and applications, is showcasing and demonstrating location-based services at the Third Asia Pacific Mobile Location Services & Content Delivery 2002 show.

Openwave will demonstrate software applications for both commercial and emergency (E911) location-based services that will help tap new revenue streams through differentiated service offerings based on user location data. Location information allows consumers to receive information and content via their mobile phone based on their current location and provides mobile operators the ability to offer revenue-generating and safety services. China is the world’s largest mobile market with over 176 million mobile subscribers and has an economy that is experiencing sustained growth. Location-based services will be a natural requirement from Chinese operators as consumer demand for sophisticated value- added mobile services rises.

“Openwave’s location based products help unlock the value of a core strategic asset that operators own– the location of their subscribers,” said Don Oas, vice president of Openwave in Asia Pacific. “Openwave’s solution transforms this raw user information into new revenue sources. Globally, location-based services such as mobile emergency services are currently in demand by wireless operators and expected to be early drivers in the adoption of mobile data services.”

Already the world’s largest provider of mobile Internet software, Openwave’s recent acquisition of SignalSoft extends Openwave’s ability to lead the industry in creating a Multi- Service Platform software category that enables operators to deliver multiple types of end-user services. Openwave’s wireless location-based solution includes Friend Finder, which allows subscribers to locate others; InLocation, which allows users to find nearby businesses; SafetyFirst, which routes users to the closest public safety answering point. The wireless application developer community can now develop a richer and more integrated set of applications based on these offerings.

In China, Openwave’s location-based solutions are already in trial or in use. In November 2001, SignalSoft and its Chinese partner, A-INFO Science and Technology Inc. (A-INFO), announced a location-based services trial with Sichuan Mobile Communication Company (Sichuan Mobile). Sichuan Mobile is a subsidiary of China Mobile, the world's second largest wireless telecommunications company. Location-based services were trialed based on Short Message Service (SMS) and voice user interface to Sichuan Mobile subscribers in the Sichuan province of China. The Sichuan Mobile trial utilized SignalSoft's Location Manager™ gateway, Location Studio™ and local.info™ information services products and also included SignalSoft's software customized with A-INFO's local digital map and geocoded contents. In May this year, SignalSoft® Corp., announced its SafetyFirst™ solution was available to provide emergency location services in China through the common single mobile emergency call number (110).
