OPENWAVE DOWNLOAD MANAGER DELIVERS JAVA TO MOBILE SUBSCRIBERS

Games, Ringtones, Images and More, Easy to Access, Purchase and Store

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. and YOKOHAMA, Japan - September 26, 2002 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based communication infrastructure software and applications, today announced that Openwave® Download Manager is available to customers worldwide, allowing consumers to download Java and multimedia content to their mobile phones. Openwave Download Manager allows mobile operators to control the complete supply chain, from digital content and application suppliers submitting their products, to the quality assurance and approval process, to allowing subscribers to purchase and receive content—including Java™ applications, games, ring tones, images and more— on mobile devices.

The release of Openwave Download Manager combines Openwave’s experience in multimedia content download solutions with pioneering technology acquired from Ellipsus Systems, the developer of the original reference implementation of the Java™ Vending Machine. Openwave Download Manager manages the end-to-end delivery of content to mobile devices. It receives products from suppliers, lists the products in an online storefront making them available for discovery and purchase by subscribers, and manages the delivery of the purchased products to the subscriber’s mobile device. In conjunction with the use of Openwave’s industry leading Mobile Browser version 6.1, wireless customers can now personalize their mobile phones and enjoy the experience of accessing and downloading exciting new applications and multimedia content as they are made available by third party developers.

“With Openwave Download Manager, subscribers can download and discover the rich types of content that allow users to turn their mobile phones into more powerful and entertaining devices, and in turn, drive wireless adoption,” said Richard Wong, senior vice president of worldwide marketing at Openwave.

How Openwave Download Manager Works
Subscribers use their mobile or web browser to discover compelling content for their mobile phone, using a personalized view of available content. On selecting the desired content such as a Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME™)-based game or a new ring tone from the storefront, payment is confirmed and the content can be downloaded immediately over-the-air to the mobile phone. Content that is purchased is automatically stored in the subscriber’s personal vault enabling subscribers to access the content that the subscriber has rights to even if the content is deleted from the mobile device. Charges for purchased content can be applied conveniently to the subscriber’s mobile account.

For mobile operators, Openwave Download Manager provides new ways to increase data services usage and capture new revenue streams. Mobile operators have control over the content offering through the management of supplier relationships and the product submission process. Mobile operators can also set license terms, and realize a revenue share from the purchased content. Openwave Download Manager offers flexibility in pricing, payment and rating models to address the needs of disparate subscribers coupled with efficient billing integration. It supports many different pricing models (e.g., usage or time limits, trial and subscription), payment methods (e.g., pre-pay, post-pay and online) and custom rating models (e.g., special discounts). Another benefit includes the support of multi-currency and multi-language deployments; so mobile operators can manage download services from a central location for multiple operating companies.

For content providers, Openwave Download Manager provides access to the mobile operator’s installed base of subscribers. Openwave Download Manager has supply chain management capabilities that make it easy for the content providers to submit content for publication and provide updates to existing products. Content submitted to the system is automatically qualified and is published when the operator gives final approval. Openwave Download Manager enables revenue sharing arrangements by tracking product purchases and provides reporting capabilities critical to commercial success.
