  OPENWAVE STRENGTHENS BOARD WITH NEW APPOINTMENTS
  

  Bernard Puckett Named Chairman; Kevin Kennedy Joins Board
 
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - October 15, 2002 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based communication infrastructure software and applications, today announced changes to its board of directors. Bernard Puckett has been elected chairman of the board. CEO Don Listwin will become vice chairman of the board. Kevin Kennedy, chief operating officer of Openwave has been appointed to the board of directors, replacing John MacFarlane, who resigned from the board on October 11, 2002 after many years of valuable service with Software.com and Openwave.

“Bernard’s distinguished career coupled with his extensive telecommunications experience strengthens our board. I am pleased to have someone of Bernard’s caliber assume an expanded role as board chairman,” said Don Listwin, vice chairman, president and CEO of Openwave. “And, on behalf of the board, I thank John MacFarlane for his considerable contributions to Openwave and previously with Software.com over the years.”

Bernard Puckett has served on Openwave’s board since November 2000. Prior to the merger of Phone.com and Software.com, Puckett was a director of Software.com. He is the former president and chief executive officer of Mobile Telecommunications Technologies Corp. (Mtel). Prior to joining Mtel in 1994, Puckett spent 26 years with IBM, most recently as senior vice president-corporate strategy and development. Previously, he held executive positions at IBM in marketing, finance, product development, manufacturing and new business development. He also serves on the boards of IMS Health and Syncor International.

Kevin Kennedy is chief operating officer of Openwave and is responsible for day-to-day business operations. A highly-accomplished business and technology executive, Kennedy has 25 years of experience in the networking and telecommunications industries. Prior to joining Openwave, he spent seven years at Cisco Systems driving Cisco into new billion dollar markets and most recently was senior vice president of the Service Provider line of business. During his 17 years at Bell Laboratories, Kennedy was responsible for establishing technical vision, shaping strategy, and driving the product delivery of communications software and hardware programs.
