OPENWAVE MOBILE BROWSER EXCEEDS 300 MILLION COPIES SOLD

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - October 17, 2002 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based communication infrastructure software and applications, today announced that its Openwave Mobile Browser has now shipped on more than 300 million handsets worldwide. This year alone Openwave is on course to ship over 100 million copies of its browser software, putting it in an elite league of software suppliers that have a track record of shipping such high volumes of software year over year. The technology leadership of Openwave and its unique ability to work with over 40 handset manufacturer customers and to support nearly 500 combinations of device architectures and operating systems were the cornerstones of this achievement.

Openwave estimates that it has approximately 60 percent market share of all mobile browsers that are shipped worldwide – with close to 97 percent share in the US, 25 percent in Japan and about 54 percent market share in Europe. The client software business earns licensing and support fees from every top handset manufacturer in the world.

Two recent announcements signal important product milestones for Openwave client software as it reaches this 300 million mark. In September 2002, Openwave announced the launch of its WAP 2.0-compliant Mobile Browser version 6.1, which is now slated to ship in over 45 handset models with more being added to the pipeline each month. This new version adds XHTML and i-mode/cHTML support to existing content markup rendering capabilities and exclusive end user-focused improvements such as the Autofill feature. Openwave is now developing its third upgrade of its WAP 2.0 browser, having last year shipped the first mass-market WAP 2.0 browser software in the world for KDDI in Japan.

Openwave also recently announced and demonstrated Mobile JAM Plus, a new product for 2003 providing a full mobile Java environment, including integrated application and multimedia content management features. Mobile JAM Plus broadens Openwave client software beyond the browser and unifies the mobile data user experience across all applications and all content types for the phone. Continuing its commitment to leading and implementing open standards across all of its technologies, Openwave plans to implement MIDP 2.0 in Mobile JAM Plus once the standard has been finalized.

“The coming of WAP2 technology from Japan to the Americas and Europe, plus the rise of mobile Java, means that developers can create more mobile applications and content that consumers and enterprises want to use,” said Thomas Reardon, co-CTO, Openwave Systems. “This is an important moment for our industry. Highly usable and capable client software for mass market mobile phones is now more valuable than ever.”

About Openwave Mobile Browser
Openwave Mobile Browser version 6.1 is based on standard technologies and supports the WAP 2.0 specification. The browser also supports XHTML Mobile Profile and Wireless Cascading Style Sheets (WCSS) to provide significant benefits for developers by allowing them to use the same content creation tools and utilities they use today for the PC-based web. Enhanced graphical user interface (GUI) features make it easier for application developers to adapt PC-based interfaces to mobile devices. In addition, the enhanced GUI features make Web applications more intuitive to subscribers. Openwave Mobile Browser is available globally and can be used on all carrier networks that utilize industry standards for mobile data. More than 40 manufacturers around the world currently license Openwave Mobile Browser.
