OPENWAVE MOBILE BROWSER FEATURED ON NEW WIRELESS HANDSETS FROM KYOCERA WIRELESS CORP.

CTIA and REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - March 17, 2003 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: OPWV), the leading independent provider of open software products and services for the mobile communications industry, today announced that Openwave® Mobile Browser has been selected as the browser of choice for upcoming wireless phones from Kyocera Wireless Corp. Kyocera Wireless Corp. is the leading manufacturer of CDMA handsets in North America and among the leaders worldwide.

Implemented by 45 manufacturers in the wireless market worldwide and shipped in over 350 million handsets to-date, Openwave Mobile Browser allows carriers to easily enable their end users to discover and enjoy mobile services with games, ringtones, graphics and other types of rich content. Users and content developers recognize Openwave client software for color phones for its superior, easy-to-view implementation of XHTML Mobile Profile, which unlike its competition supports commonly used standard markup language features such as in-line forms and background images.

"We chose Openwave Mobile Browser based on a combination of our experience and familiarity with Openwave along with the fact that Openwave's browser is widely accepted by our carrier partners," said Don McGuire, vice president of global marketing at Kyocera Wireless Corp. "Openwave has always delivered reliable, quality browser software, a feature becoming ever more important in developing compelling phones for our customers."

"Our successful track record of delivering sophisticated and cost-effective browser software for CDMA networks was recognized and rewarded by Kyocera Wireless with this agreement," said Thomas Reardon, co-CTO, Openwave Systems." We are pleased to renew our relationship with Kyocera, one of the highest-volume manufacturers of phones for CDMA markets."

  • A "snapshot" feature allowing users to save web pages for later off-line viewing
  • Support for cookies and an authentication "wallet", making it easier for sites to recognize return customers and enable secure, one-click shopping
Openwave Mobile Browser is based on open standard technologies and supports the WAP 2.0 specification. The browser also supports XHTML Mobile Profile and Wireless Cascading Style Sheets (WCSS) to provide significant benefits for developers by allowing them to use the same content creation tools and utilities they use today for the PC-based web. Enhanced graphical user interface (GUI) features make it easier for application developers to adapt PC-based interfaces to mobile devices. In addition, the enhanced GUI features make Web applications more intuitive to subscribers. Openwave Mobile Browser is available globally and can be used on all carrier networks that utilize industry standards for mobile data.
