OPENWAVE TECHNOLOGY SELECTED BY LEADING CANADIAN WIRELESS CARRIER

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - July 29, 2003 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: OPWV), the leading independent provider of open software products and services for the communications industry today announced that Bell Mobility, Canada's leading wireless provider, has licensed and is utilizing the Openwave® Mobile Access Gateway (MAG) Version 6 to support the deployment of WAP 2 phones and new enhanced wireless game services for mobile subscribers.

In addition to enhanced wireless games, the new phones support the XHTML markup language and end-to-end security. The XHTML markup language gives content providers considerably better control over the layout of the content on the phone screen and allows them to use features such as buttons, tables, background color and input boxes. The result is web pages for phones that look more like small, colorful versions of Internet sites. The support for end-to-end security allows for the development of secure banking, enterprise and m-commerce applications.

"With new WAP 2 phones entering the market with support for services like XHTML browsing, photo messaging and downloads, it is important for operators to quickly add support for these new phones within their architecture," said David Hose, vice president and general manager, infrastructure group for Openwave. "Openwave's Mobile Access Gateway 6 makes this transition straight forward by adding WAP 2 support to the most widely deployed WAP Gateway in the industry."

Openwave MAG 6 is a fully WAP 2 compliant and is also backward compatible with WAP 1 devices. It provides unparalleled interoperability with handsets, services and applications and offers operators a low-risk and low-cost upgrade path from their existing gateway deployment. Openwave MAG is currently deployed at over 70 customers worldwide.
