  KDDI UPGRADES TO LATEST OPENWAVE MOBILE BROWSER FOR FIRST MEGAPIXEL CAMERA PHONES
 

  Openwave Continues Leadership in Wap 2.0 for Today's Advanced Handsets
 
TOKYO, Japan and REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - August 18, 2003 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced that KDDI, Japan's major total communications operator and ubiquitous solution company, has upgraded to Openwave Mobile Browser Version 6.2 for its first set of EZweb megapixel camera phones. Openwave's client and server WAP 2.0 technology allows KDDI and operators worldwide to support color handsets, innovative applications, and easy access to compelling content - -providing a richer, more appealing end-user experience that has drawn millions of new customers.

Since launching its WAP 2.0 data services in December 2001, KDDI has added more than 7million new subscribers all utilizing Openwave client and server technology to power today's popular EZweb services such as photo messaging, movie messaging, global positioning and gaming. "With Openwave's support, we were able to get to market in time to release the first volume shipped camera phone with over 1 megapixel camera in a very competitive market," said Mr. Toshio Maki, general manager, Product Management Department, Strategic "au" Business Development Division, "au" Business Sector at KDDI. "The new browser's fast performance and superior usability make this product more attractive to consumers. Openwave's continued innovations make them a great strategic partner for us."

Openwave's WAP 2.0 technology deployed at KDDI includes Openwave® WAP 2.0 Gateway, Openwave Provisioning Manager and Openwave Mobile Browser Versions 6.0 and 6.2. Together, these technologies help to power KDDI's 3G CDMA 2000 1x mobile Internet service called EZweb.
