OPENWAVE SHIPS MOBILE MESSAGING CLIENT IN TWO LGE HANDSETS

Openwave Largest Volume Producer of Phone Software for MMS-Enabled Handsets

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - September 2, 2003 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced that Openwave Mobile Messaging Client Version 6 is shipping on the LGE 4050 for the GSM market and will ship on the LGE 5450 handset for the CDMA market approximately one month later. The LGE phones will be two of the earliest devices equipped with an embedded MMS client for subscribers in the Americas.

Openwave Mobile Messaging Client software has already shipped on six devices with a total of twenty expected to ship by the end of 2003. Designed to drive mobile data usage by providing a common user experience across messaging, browsing, calendar, address book and other phone applications, the Openwave Mobile Messaging Client offers a flexible and feature rich solution enabling operators to offer services such as photo messaging, multimedia communication, and rich third party content.

"We have come a long way with LGE in just the past year, establishing two back-to-back 'firsts' across CDMA markets with our client software," said Thomas Reardon, vice president and general manager, Openwave. "From partnering in the launch of the LGE 5350 with our WAP 2 browser, to shipping the new set of LGE phones with the Openwave Mobile Messaging Client in both GSM and CDMA markets, our combined efforts are helping to set the pace for a better user experience for messaging, downloads and XHTML content."

Handset manufacturers that port Openwave Mobile Browser Version 6 today can easily integrate Openwave Mobile Messaging Client Version 6 now, and seamlessly upgrade to Openwave Mobile Messaging Client Version 7.0, an integrated part of the recently announced set of powerful phone tools, Version 7.0, (V7). Openwave Mobile Messaging Client Version 7.0 features an integrated messaging client supporting SMS, EMS, MMS, and email.

Openwave Mobile Messaging Client has been tested with a wide variety of handsets and servers to ensure full interoperability. Manufacturers benefit from reduced testing and acceptance risks because Openwave client software technology interoperates with all major industry standard MMSC servers, including the Openwave MMSC. Additionally, adding in Openwave Mobile Messaging Client requires minimal additional porting effort beyond that required for the browser, resulting in a reduced integration effort and leading to faster time to market for today's messaging handsets.

Developers can download the Openwave Phone Simulator 6.2.2 and the MMS SDK to create and test their MMS content. The latest Phone Simulator contains the Mobile Messaging Client and can be downloaded from http://developer.openwave.com.

About Openwave Mobile Messaging Client
Openwave Mobile Messaging Client brings new efficiencies and capabilities to manufacturers, which include:
  • Allowing manufacturers to use one piece of software for WAP 2 and MMS which reduces integration efforts for existing Openwave Mobile Browser customers, enabling a smaller software footprint in the handset over multi-vendor solutions as well as faster time-to-market
  • Most interoperable, ubiquitously tested network software technology for mobile devices allowing users the ability to send and receive messages to the widest variety of phones, across networks and operators, due to Openwave client software incumbency
  • An easy way for users to send and receive messages containing text, images, sound, and other media
  • Support of both MMS SMIL slideshows and XHTML Mobile Profile messages, and compliance with the latest standards from 3GPP and OMA (Open Mobile Alliance)
  • Design with the end user in mind, featuring an easy to use, WYSIWYG interface
  • Consistent interface across phone address books, file stores and photo applications on today's mobile phones
