  OPENWAVE ANNOUNCES GENERAL AVAILABILITY OF OPENWAVE'S ANTI-VIRUS SOLUTION POWERED BY NETWORK ASSOCIATES MCAFEE ANTI-VIRUS TECHNOLOGY
  

  By Integrating McAfee Anti-virus Technology into Openwave Email Mx, Openwave Helps Keep Viruses out Before they Reach End Users' In-Boxes
 
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - September 22, 2003 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced the general availability of Openwave's anti-virus solution that utilizes Network Associates® leading McAfee® anti-virus system protection technology to detect and block viruses at the mail server gateway. The Openwave solution integrates McAfee server-based anti-virus technology into the Openwave® Email Mx messaging platform.

The network-based anti-virus solution offers communications service providers (CSPs) a higher level of protection from viruses and stops viruses before they reach the end-user's inbox, as compared to a desktop-based solution. Research commissioned by the International Computer Security Association revealed that 86% of all viruses can be spread through e-mail, and according to Computer Economics, the economic impact of virus attacks on information systems has amounted to $17.1 billion dollars in 2000, exponentially growing in 2001-2002. To help battle the devastating effects of email-borne viruses, Openwave will use the unique McAfee anti-virus defense scan engine design to extend virus detection capabilities to the edge of the network. The McAfee server-based virus scanner sidelines and scans incoming and outgoing messages as they pass through the Mail Transfer Agent (MTA).

Openwave's anti-virus solution, powered by McAfee anti-virus system protection technology, provides communication service providers with:
  • Higher level of protection: CSPs can isolate and contain a virus without relying on the end-user.
  • Centralized administration: Centralized and controlled virus DAT and Engine updates, and faster response to virus attacks.
  • Unmatched peripheral protection: Ability to prevent viruses propagated by e-mail at the edge of network by scanning at the gateway.
