  OPENWAVE HOSTS MESSAGING ANTI-ABUSE CONFERENCE

Leading Industry Experts in Messaging and Security Collaborate on Ways to Combat Viruses and Spam

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - September 29, 2003 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, assembled the world's leading wireline and wireless operators, including operators such as Bell South, Bell Canada, TeliaSonera, Sprint, Cingular and J-PHONE; lawmakers; direct marketers; and solution providers last week in Santa Barbara to address the issues around messaging system abuse in email, Multimedia messaging (MMS) and Short Messaging Services (SMS).

During the conference, renowned anti-abuse experts discussed various tools that are being used to fight spam and viruses. The discussion focused on policy, free speech and technology. The conference represents Openwave's commitment to delivering the technologies and services to address messaging anti-abuse and is part of an ongoing program to encourage key industry leaders to collaborate in future anti-abuse efforts. "We are learning that regulation is open to interpretation and it is the collaboration of technology, service providers, policy and regulation that will solve the messaging anti-abuse problem," says Rich Wong, general manager of messaging products at Openwave. "During the conference we heard from thought leaders like Professor Lawrence Lessig who acknowledged the benefits of the technical community's involvement in addressing the challenges faced."

Jennifer Brennan, staff attorney for the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) Western Region, discussed the role of the FTC and their commitment to stopping spam. At the same time she cautioned against over regulation because it could impede the flow of important information. The struggle to balance the problems caused by spam with the need for open communication and commerce was repeated throughout the conference.

On the technology front there are a number of initiatives and solutions gaining momentum. From white lists to filters, personal controls to network administration, there is evidence that operators are working to protect the consumer.

The conference was sponsored by Brightmail, Corvigo, McAfee, IBM, MX Logic, Cloudmark and Hewlett Packard, Co.
