OPENWAVE MOBILE SDK NOW AVAILABLE TO MICROSOFT DEVELOPER COMMUNITY

Mobile Application Developers Gain Greater Access To Powerful Tools For Delivering Next Generation Mobile Data Services

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - October 28, 2003 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWVD), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced that Openwave® Mobile SDK can now plug in to the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 development environment. In addition, the Openwave Mobile SDK will be made available on a Microsoft developer training DVD which will be distributed at Microsoft developer events in Europe.

Taking advantage of Openwave's installed base of over 450 million browser-enabled phones, the collaboration between Microsoft and Openwave is expected to give developers greater access to two powerful mobile phone development resources to develop advanced mobile data service and applications for next-generation handsets.

"We are working with Microsoft to bring the Openwave Mobile SDK, which includes our flagship phone simulator, to the large community of Microsoft Visual Studio .NET developers," said Gina Centoni, vice president, Openwave Developer Network. "Because of Openwave's large installed base of browser-enabled phones and Microsoft's leading Visual Studio .NET development environment, we have made it easier for developers to use the Openwave Mobile SDK to build and test mobile applications within Visual Studio .NET."

"Microsoft is pleased that Openwave has enabled the Openwave Mobile SDK to integrate with Visual Studio .NET," said David Lazar, Visual Studio .NET Marketing Director, Microsoft. "This integration will make it simple for developers to build web applications using Visual Studio .NET then test them in Openwave's phone simulators."

Openwave Mobile SDK enables the development of high quality browsing, messaging, and downloadable applications based on the latest mobile technologies. Visual Studio .NET 2003 offers full support for the more than 200 Web-enabled devices, including Website META Language-capable phones, pagers and wireless PDAs via the Microsoft ASP.NET mobile controls, supported in both Visual Studio .NET 2003 and Windows Server 2003, and Windows 2000 platforms.

"As a developer partner of Openwave, we have found that the Openwave Mobile SDK is a valuable testing and development resource for any developer building applications for mobile phones," said David Bluhm, president Americas and executive vice president of business development, Mforma. "Openwave's relationship with Microsoft will improve the development environment for building mobile phone applications."

Currently, the Openwave Mobile Browser can be found in more than 450 million handsets from 47 manufacturers worldwide. Over 650,000 developers have already downloaded the Openwave Mobile SDK to create compelling mobile applications that are compatible with Openwave Mobile Browser.
