VIVO IS THE FIRST LATIN AMERICAN CDMA CARRIER TO LAUNCH MMS SOLUTION [Partner Release]

Cell phones with capability of transmitting images (photos and pictures) and sounds will be made available to clients in October

FUTURECOMM, FLORIANOPOLIS, Brazil - October 28, 2003 -- Vivo, the largest mobile telephone operator in South America, today announced the first MMS service (Multimedia Message Service) using CDMA technology in Latin America.

The first cell phone configured for MMS services is the Samsung Twist which features a built-in camera that rotates to take pictures, in addition to a built-in flash, rotating viewer, and the capability to store up to 100 pictures and display up to 260 thousand colors. The Twist also enables pictures to be emailed or messaged to another cell phone, and has the capability of transmitting both text and music.

Luis Avelar, VP of Marketing and Innovation, says this launch is very important because it showcases Vivo as a pioneer within the CDMA industry and nicely aligns with Vivo's strategy to consolidate wireless data services.

Vivo's MMS services, developed on Openwave System's platform (Openwave Systems Inc.: Nasdaq: OPWVD), are already on the air. Openwave's experience and proven history developing messaging technologies distinguish and differentiate Vivo's infrastructure from other carriers. Among other MMSC vendors, Openwave's Multimedia Messaging technology supports the most cellular camera phones in the world, serving more than 13 million people with multimedia messaging.

Vivo will revolutionize the messaging industry in Brazil by offering an MMS Mini-site developed by PMovil that offers distinctive and creative content enabling clients to send and receive MMS Torpedos. Users who have MMS-enabled phones will be able to receive the MMS Torpedos on their own phone, whether they are sent from another type of handset or via the Internet. Vivo clients who do not have MMS-enabled phones will receive an SMS Torpedo with a code to view the MMS Torpedo in the Pmovil Portal.

Pmovil is also responsible for Vivo's MMS Mini-site content, which was developed by several partners such as iG, Abril, Folha Online, VoxCards, and Promogard. This content presents great diversification and brings themes that have, until now, been unexploited in the MMS world market. The result of this collaboration revolutionizes the concept of multimedia content by enriching it exponentially. For example, a client may send images from soccer games for the week or pictures of events and celebrities associated with these events.

"We are the first CDMA carrier in Latin America to offer this service. We believe these MMS applications, exclusive to Vivo, in conjunction with the MMS Mini-site will serve as a bridge for a communication experience that is attractive, fun and useful in the use of wireless technology. These services bring a competitive edge to our CDMA operations in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Paraná", concludes Luis Avelar.
