OPENWAVE SYSTEMS PARTICIPATES IN OPEN MOBILE ALLIANCE'S TEST FEST

BELLEVUE, Wash. - November 25, 2003 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced it successfully tested several of Open Mobile Alliance's (OMA) enabler implementations at the latest Test Fest held November 19-21, 2003 in Bellevue, Washington. Continuing its tradition as a leading technology provider to the industry, Openwave successfully tested Openwave® Download Manager (ODM) and Openwave Phone Suite V7 with OMA's DRM/download enabler test, Openwave Instant Messaging and Presence Server (IMPS) with OMA's IMPS enabler test, and Openwave Multimedia Messaging Service Center (MMSC) and Openwave Mobile Messaging Client with OMA's MMS enabler test.

Openwave's products are engineered to meet open industry standards and ensure cross vendor interoperability, improving the user experience and accelerating the adoption of mobile data services. Enabler implementations were tested on the following:
  • Openwave Download Manager enables mobile operators to provide successful download services, delivering a superior end user experience with robust digital rights management capabilities, support for all relevant discovery and delivery mechanisms, and easy integration with operator back-end systems.

  • Openwave Phone Suite V7 offers a modular suite of phone applications, services and components that allow manufacturers to add new phone functionality with maximum flexibility and minimum time to market. It contains a comprehensive download and content management solution integrated with OMA DRM specifications.

  • Openwave IMPS brings together the best possible mobile messaging experience with a carrier-grade server infrastructure. Based on OMA IMPS specifications, Openwave IMPS combines instant messaging with online status and availability information, buddy and chat search, chat invitations, public and private chat rooms, and more.

  • Openwave Multimedia Messaging Service Center (MMSC) is a flexible, complete messaging platform that enables operators to distinguish their services and accelerate adoption and usage. The Openwave MMSC provides a superior user experience across multiple handsets and extends multimedia messaging to all legacy handsets and email users.

  • Openwave Mobile Messaging Client enables handset manufacturers to offer a complete, integrated messaging client that supports the latest standards and protocols, fulfills operators' evolving requirements, and promotes superior usability, all while minimizing the resources and time required to launch new devices.
OMA's test fests are designed to corroborate OMA specifications and help OMA member companies develop and deploy interoperable products and services. In addition, proving interoperability with other member implementations based on OMA specifications helps companies hone their implementation process so operators can deploy fully interoperable services and expedite end-user adoption.

"Our involvement in the OMA standardization process is important to our customers because it ensures that independent implementations can interoperate with Openwave products, thereby enabling operators to deploy the services essential for rapid end-user adoption," said Kevin Wagner, director of technology at Openwave Systems. "Our successful completion of the interoperability DRM/download, IMPS and MMS test enablers underlines Openwave's commitment to open standards and developing interoperable products."

"OMA's Test Fests are a critical step in removing the barriers to global user adoption and by ensuring seamless application interoperability," said Sanjay Gupta, Chair of the IOP Working Group, OMA Technical Plenary. OMA test fests further OMA's mission to grow the market for the entire mobile industry and play a decisive role in the success of companies across the mobile value chain."
