OPENWAVE AND BRIGHTMAIL PARTNER TO DELIVER SOLUTIONS TO FIGHT SPAM

Companies Collaborate to Detect Spam at the Network Before It Reaches End-Users' In-Boxes

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - December 1, 2003 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced that it has entered into an agreement with Brightmail, the anti-spam technology and market leader, to work together to fight spam before it reaches the end-user's mailbox. As part of the collaboration, Openwave will resell Brightmail Anti-Spam™ software as part of its Openwave® Email Mx platform and Brightmail will join Openwave's Messaging Anti-Abuse Partner Program in the fight against messaging abuse. The companies have already integrated this solution for nine service providers with more than 11 million mailboxes worldwide. This announcement is an extension of the deep technical relationship that the companies have enjoyed over the past four years.

"Openwave is dedicated to helping operators fight spam and deliver an integrated product offering that allows customer to deliver differentiated messaging services," said Rich Wong, general manager of messaging products at Openwave. "Spam has become an insidious problem, according to IDC, each day 7.7 billion junk emails are sent in North America and 13.5 billion are sent worldwide. Our joint offering with Brightmail offers complete anti-spam prevention so that our customers can focus on delivering new value-added messaging services without worrying about spam attacks to their system."

"Because spam now comprises more than 50% of all Internet email messages, it is straining the resources and viability of email as the primary communications tool for business," remarked Enrique Salem, president and CEO of Brightmail. "The integrated solution from Openwave and Brightmail offers service providers the leading edge network controls and the world's most accurate and complete spam defense to prevent spam attacks from reaching their end users' inbox."

The fully integrated solution from Openwave and Brightmail allows service providers to keep spam off the system before it reaches an end user's inbox, prevent spammers from stealing email addresses from a provider, and prevent malicious attacks that can shut down service providers' networks.

With more than 147 million mailboxes utilized for email, mobile email, business messaging, voicemail, photo messaging, and multimedia messaging services, Openwave Email Mx is a messaging platform for multiple service creation, allowing operators to leverage their investment to extend beyond email and protect against spam and viruses.
