OPENWAVE PHONE SOFTWARE SHIPS IN HALF A BILLION PHONES

Industry Milestone Reached Through Phone Software Technology Advances; Data Adoption Increases Through Better User Experience

CANNES, France & REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - February 23, 2004 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced it has achieved a new industry milestone by shipping its half a billionth unit of phone software for mass market data phones. The company also noted resurgence in WAP usage and an increase in handset manufacturer demand for its messaging client technologies that allows mobile operators to perfect the user experience into a broader array of new data services.

Openwave data phone software enables operators and manufacturers to offer end users improved, differentiated, customized and easy-to-use services for the mass market. Today Openwave phone software is shipping in some of the world's most popular and feature rich data phones including the Siemens MC60 and CX65, the Vodafone live! Sharp GX10 and GX20, the Sagem myX-6, and the LG 5350. Additionally, Openwave® Mobile Messaging Client software has more than 18 manufacturers adopting the company's messaging technology with over 45 phone models on or coming to market.

"This is a wonderful milestone for Openwave and a hallmark of the importance of our phone software in the industry," said Thomas Reardon, vice president and general manager, Client Software, Openwave. "With overall improvements in the user experience, our phone software is thriving and has become the core component between the device and its applications. Because customers continue to choose Openwave's market leading technology, we retain over 50% market share in mobile browser shipments and ship our software in over 50 million phones per quarter."

Phone Software Technology Thrives
Today data phone software technology is moving far beyond the early stages of WAP and into the mainstream segments of the mobile sector. Recent reports from the Mobile Data Association suggest that WAP page impressions reached 8 billion by the end of 2003. This number is expected to increase as consumer demand increases for downloads, games, and services enabled by Openwave phone software. Built on open standards, the latest iteration of Openwave phone software is Openwave® Phone Suite Version 7 (V7). Openwave Phone Suite V7, shipping on phones this year, is a standards-based middleware platform and modular suite of phone applications designed to drive mobile data usage by providing a common user experience across services. It enables operators and phone manufacturers to rapidly integrate popular applications; cost-effectively add new phone functionality and third-party applications; and deliver customized, differentiated services and phones.
