CONSUMER ADOPTION OF WIRELESS DATA SERVICES GROWS IN AMERICAS

Openwave Partners with Mobile Operators to Perfect Data User Experience

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - March 22, 2004 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of messaging software products and services for the communications industry, today announced that wireless data applications are progressing in the Americas at a significant rate. This is evidenced by growth in wireless data revenues, wireless data ARPU, and consumer adoption of services such as Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), ring tones, Java applications, games, XHTML and content discovery, and usage on mobile technologies. Openwave's portfolio of software and services is helping operators drive adoption and increase usage of these data applications.

"Wireless applications and in particular entertainment and messaging are being adopted quickly, "said Scott Ellison, Program Director, Wireless & Mobile Communications, IDC. "We have had color screen phones less than two years in the U.S. and just look how pervasive wireless data has become. "

"TELUS Mobility has seen steady increases in data use since we launched our picture messaging service last November," said Robert Blumenthal, Vice President of Products and Services at TELUS Mobility. "Key to our success has been offering an intuitive and easy to use service. Our clients are able to take pictures with their camera phones instantly, and share them just as quickly using Openwave's MMS platform. As such, Openwave is an important part of our picture messaging success."

Openwave is the leading company enabling operators to deliver differentiated data services that will work on any platform, device and network. Since CTIA 2003, Openwave deployed new technology architectures in the areas of messaging applications, mobile infrastructure and client software that improve the user experience, enabling the company to respond to customers' growing requirements for new software and services that will help drive usage and customer loyalty.

"Wireless carriers are most interested in how we can help them attract and maintain subscriber loyalty by delivering services that are compelling, easy to use and will distinguish their brands," said David Hose, chief development officer at Openwave. "Operators have successfully launched data services and now they are looking for partnerships that will help drive usage. Openwave's offerings and approach are designed with the end user experience in mind."

Openwave continues to gain momentum across its mobile product portfolio and offerings, including:
  • Momentum with WAP 2 services with over 24 customers worldwide who have recently deployed MAG 6 including Vodafone Italy, Vodafone Spain, Vodafone Malta, Telus, Cingular and Cincinnati Bell. There are more than 85 billion transactions on WAP 2 using Openwave's MAG6. Worldwide growth of Openwave WAP 2 worldwide transactions increased by 247 percent to over 66.8 billion transactions at the end of December 2003, compared to a year ago.
  • Multimedia messaging with the most proven and best user experience in client and server offerings. Momentum with Openwave MMSC software, which has been deployed by over 20 customers worldwide. 12 of these operators have deployed in the last six months and are located in the Americas. The Openwave messaging client is now shipping in 25 devices with 20 more under development.
