VODAFONE SPAIN TO DEPLOY OPENWAVE MOBILE ACCESS GATEWAY 6 FOR ITS VODAFONE LIVE! SERVICES

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - March 22, 2004 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced that Vodafone Spain will adopt the Openwave® Mobile Access Gateway (MAG) Version 6 for its industry-leading Vodafone live! service. Openwave MAG 6 reflects Openwave's commitment to increasing data usage and carrier revenue by refining the end-user experience of mobile data, and will enable Vodafone to further increase usage of its current services using the latest mobile handsets.

Vodafone Spain has chosen to upgrade its network to use Openwave MAG 6 due to the interoperable and standards compliant gateway, which provides a complete and integrated solution for WAP 1 and WAP 2 capabilities. The capabilities that WAP 2 brings to the industry are personified in Vodafone live! - Vodafone's industry-leading multimedia service that currently has over 376,000 customers in Spain and 4.5 million active customers worldwide.

The arrival of WAP 2 has contributed to a rise in daily WAP impressions from 12 million in November 2002 to 31 million in November 2003, an increase of over 250 percent, according to the Mobile Data Association. However, the movement from WAP 1 to WAP 2 coupled with the emergence of 3G has placed new demands on operators. To successfully manage these demands, operators need a new breed of mobile data infrastructure, which provides not only a core set of gateway capabilities, but also a modular architecture that can be easily extended to support new and upcoming mobile data business models. Openwave is a leader in this segment with over 70 MAG deployments to date, and MAG 6 has extensible architecture that enables carriers like Vodafone Spain to benefit from premium billing, flexible subscriber services management, identity & profile management and content filtering. It also supports the latest WAP services and applications.

"With new WAP 2 handsets entering the market with support for services like XHTML browsing, photo messaging and downloads, it is important for operators to quickly add support for these new phones and make the most of their capabilities," said Alan Black, managing director of EMEA at Openwave. "As the most proven, interoperable WAP gateway on the market, Openwave MAG 6 makes this transition straightforward and will assist Vodafone Spain in the growth of its mobile data offering by rolling out new applications and services to customers on the very latest handsets."

Offering unparalleled interoperability with handsets, services and applications, Openwave MAG 6 goes beyond the capabilities of competitive WAP gateways. Increasing the addressable market for operators by delivering the optimum page quality for each visiting browser, MAG 6 allows the operator to manage subscriber identity and enforce business policy on a network level by dividing subscribers into different groups and applying access control, billing and routing.
