CINCINNATI BELL SELECTS OPENWAVE EDGE GX FOR MESSAGING ANTI-ABUSE SOLUTION

Openwave Edge Gx Offers Service-Providers Inbound and Outbound Defense to Protect Subscribers

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - July 7, 2004 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced that Cincinnati Bell has selected Openwave's anti-abuse solution, Openwave Edge Gx, to protect customers against spam, viruses and other malicious attacks. Selected because it is the preeminent solution available in the market that specifically addresses messaging abuse at the service provider rather than the enterprise level, Openwave Edge Gx detects and prevents unwanted email before it enters the network and stops infected outbound email.

"Cincinnati Bell approached Openwave looking for a complete solution that would enable them to protect their customers from the constant barrage of messaging abuse," said Rich Wong, general manager of messaging applications, Openwave Systems. "Because Openwave Edge Gx resides at the edge of the network, it stops unhealthy and annoying email from ever entering the system and blocks infected outbound email thwarting spammers and hackers cold in their tracks."

During the trial phase, Openwave Edge Gx eliminated unpredictable spikes in message traffic from spam and virus attacks that threatened to destabilize the system. Openwave Edge Gx made system management and sizing much easier and decreased the costs of anti-abuse filters.

"Soon after the trials began, we were convinced that Openwave Edge Gx was the right solution because it offered the flexibility to create our own unique acceptable usage policy and to easily extend the functionality as the industry changes." said Rick Wagner, director of data systems and engineering for Cincinnati Bell. "Openwave Edge Gx is helping us do much more than just fight spam, it has helped us address all forms of messaging abuse and has even simplified management of our entire messaging infrastructure."
