OPENWAVE AND ECHOWORX TEAM TO DELIVER SECURE EMAIL

Secure Messaging Solution Enables ISPs to Deliver New Value-Add Security Service

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. and TORONTO, Ontario - August 23, 2004 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, and Echoworx Corporation, the company that secures Internet communications, today announced a collaboration to improve email security for service providers worldwide.

Under a distribution agreement entered into today, Openwave will offer Echoworx Secure Email™ as a value-added service option to the Openwave® Email Mx messaging platform. Echoworx Secure Email extends the Openwave Email Mx messaging platform, enabling Internet Service Providers to provide easy-to-use secure email as an addition to Openwave Messaging portfolio of value-added security services like Edge Gx Anti-Abuse.

"Email has become a dominant method of communication, making it a natural target for unsolicited and malicious activity," says Rich Wong, general manager of messaging products, Openwave. "As the world's leading provider of email infrastructure and as a leader in fighting messaging abuse, we continue to provide ISPs with solutions that make email a secure and trusted form of communication."

Echoworx Secure Email is a revenue-generating service that enables ISPs to provide their consumer and business subscribers the ability to easily encrypt and decrypt emails at their desktop. It is integrated with the Openwave platform, and can be added to an existing Openwave Email Mx installation with minimal effort and impact on the infrastructure.

"Leading ISPs already offer value-added security services like Anti-Virus and Anti-Spam," says Michael Ginsberg, CEO of Echoworx. "Echoworx Secure Email a natural addition to the increasingly important revenue generating portfolio of ISP services. The product expands the ISP's market for value-added services in that it is not tied to the ISP's email subscriber base. Anyone with an email address can subscribe to the secure email service offered by an ISP without having to move from their current email box provider."

With the click of a button, subscribers can send encrypted messages from their existing email applications or from Openwave's WebEdge webmail. Messages are digitally signed by the sender and are secured such that only the intended recipient can unlock them. The encryption functions and complexity of the underlying encryption technology are completely hidden from the subscriber.
