  OPENWAVE ANNOUNCES EXECUTIVE PROMOTIONS
  

  REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - October 6, 2004 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced two executive promotions. Steve Peters has been promoted to executive vice president and chief administrative officer and Allen Snyder has been promoted to executive vice president of the server business. Both Peters and Snyder will continue to report to Don Listwin, president and CEO.

Peters will oversee business development, corporate marketing and legal. Peters has been with the company since 1999 in senior positions responsible for legal and finance, and has served as board secretary since 2000.

Snyder's appointment supports the company's recent alignment of resources around client and server teams to better serve the company's handset manufacturer and operator customers. Snyder will oversee worldwide sales, partnerships, product development, professional services and support for the company's server business, which includes products for mobile and broadband operators. Snyder has been with the company since 2000 and previously served as senior vice president responsible for worldwide sales and professional services.

David Hose, senior vice president will lead Openwave's client business. He will oversee worldwide sales, partnerships, product development, professional services and support. Hose previously served as senior vice president responsible for product development, and prior to joining Openwave served as CEO of SignalSoft.

Peters has more than 18 years of experience in the high-tech industry. Before joining Openwave, Peters served as vice president of business development at Baan Company N.V., currently a division of Invensys PLC. Prior to joining Baan Company N.V., Peters spent nine years at Adobe Systems Inc. in a variety of roles including associate general counsel and later director of business development. He also previously worked for the law firm of Ware and Freidenrich, currently Gray, Cary, Ware and Freidenrich LLP.

Snyder has 28 years of experience in the high-tech industry, including 22 years of management leadership in product sales, customer service, software support, and professional services. Before joining Openwave, he served in senior leadership positions at Oracle and Digital Equipment Corporation.
