KYOCERA KOI 1.2 MEGAPIXEL CAMERA PHONE TO SHIP WITH OPENWAVE WAP 2 MOBILE BROWSER

Unique "Swiveling" Camera Phone's Wireless Web Access Powered by Openwave Client Software

CTIA and Redwood City, Calif. - October 27, 2004 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced that Kyocera Wireless Corp., a leading global manufacturer of CDMA handsets and devices, has integrated the Openwave Mobile Browser Version 6 into its 1.2 megapixel camera phone, the Kyocera Koi™. To date, Openwave has shipped its seven generations of client software on over 700 million phones from handset manufacturers around the world. Version 6 can be found on over 216 different phone models from 32 manufacturers.

"We have a long heritage with Kyocera and are pleased that they have chosen to use our market leading WAP 2.0 browser for this highly innovative camera phone," said Rob Williams, general manager of the client product group at Openwave. "The Openwave Mobile Browser is designed with usability in mind, delivering new features designed to enhance phone-based browsing while meeting increasingly complex operator service requirements"

Kyocera's Koi phone is targeted at users of all ages and includes a 1.2 megapixel camera, with photo and video capabilities, complemented by a large 262,000 color screen. It's unique "swivel" form factor reveals a large key pad, which significantly improves the ease with which users can enter text and data entry. It will be available from domestic CDMA wireless carriers this holiday season.

"We selected Openwave's WAP 2.0 browser because of its flexibility, functionality and broad developer appeal, enabling us to deliver a rich web experience that is also easy to use," said Don McGuire, vice president of marketing and North American sales at Kyocera Wireless Corp. "We know we can rely on Openwave to integrate its client software on our most innovative phones quickly, allowing us to bring our latest handsets to market faster."

Openwave Mobile Browser Version 6 includes many features to make browsing easier, including:
  • OMA DRM "forward lock" - Industry standard digital rights management implementation keeps licensed content secure.
  • URL Builder - Input table allows for easy entry of common URL elements such as "www." and ".com" saving users time and simplifying navigation.
  • History & Forward Navigation - Recent browser history is stored for easy return to recently visited pages, both backward and forward.
For developers, Openwave Mobile Browser Version 6 offers more capabilities to customize and simplify the user experience, such as:
  • Programmable Softkeys - Markup language determines functions and wording so softkeys can be tailored for specific phones and services.
  • WAP Pictograms - Industry standard icons such as smiley faces allow developers to know exactly which images will appear on the screen.
  • Default entry mode property - Markup language can also determine the default setting for field input entry. For instance, if a field is intended for a phone number, a developer can set the default entry to "number" reducing the end user effort of choosing numbers over letters.
