SANYO EMBEDS OPENWAVE PHONE SUITE VERSION 7 AT HEART OF NEW ORANGE 3G SIGNATURE PHONE

Openwave Phone Suite Deployment Brings a Graphically Rich User Experience and Tightly Integrated Applications to the Sanyo S-750 for Leading European Operator

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - November 15, 2004 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced its collaboration with Sanyo to deliver a unique user experience on Orange's new 3G Signature phone handset, the Sanyo S-750. Sanyo's deployment of Openwave software includes the market leading Openwave Mobile Browser V7, the latest generation of its market-leading mobile browser, and Openwave Mobile Messaging Client V7, which integrates SMS, EMS and MMS messaging into one highly usable interface.

Openwave Phone Suite Version 7 (V7) incorporates a powerful graphical application framework that integrates the core mobile applications on the phone to deliver a consistent and flexible user experience. With V7, Sanyo's S-750 provides a high degree of integration between key applications, allowing users to move seamlessly and intuitively between functions like browsing, texting and multimedia messaging, and streaming video. V7 also enables Sanyo and Orange to deliver a highly customized user interface across the Mobile Browser and Mobile Messaging Client, reinforcing device identity and service branding.

"The S-750 is Sanyo's first entry to the European 3G market. We chose V7 because it enabled us to achieve the unique look and feel and functionality of this high impact phone quickly, in response to Orange's specific service requirements," said Mr. Masahiro Naito, general manager, overseas mobile phone business unit at Sanyo. "Further, our work on V7 can now be readily reused and modified to meet the evolving service requirements of innovators like Orange."

"Sanyo's deployment of V7 demonstrates the value that manufacturers see in using Openwave client software to promptly address a broad spectrum of custom operator service requirements," said Rob Williams, vice president and general manager of the client product group at Openwave. "V7 gives manufacturers full control of the way in which the applications on their phones look, feel and interact, and is an important part of Openwave's commitment to dramatically enhance the mobile user experience."

"Openwave is delighted that Phone Suite Version 7 will play an integral role in enabling one of the most important 3G phones to be launched in the UK this year," adds Bryan Visser, general manager and vice president, EMEA, Openwave. "With 3G rapidly gaining momentum in Europe, we are proud to support Sanyo in its entry to the market and to help enable better user experiences with 3G mobile services."

The deal reinforces Openwave's position as the leading independent provider of phone software. Openwave MMS software now ships on over 60 different handsets from 20 manufacturers, while the Openwave Mobile Browser has now shipped on over 700 million devices globally. Major handset manufacturers including Motorola, Sagem, Siemens and NEC have all chosen to roll out V7 phones this year, with an additional seven manufacturers currently developing phones for launch in the next 12 months.
