OPENWAVE MOBILE DEVICE MANAGER ENHANCES USABILITY OF MICROSOFT WINDOWS MOBILE 5.0 SOFTWARE PLATFORM

Openwave Mobile Device Manager Interoperates with Microsoft's Latest Mobile Platform to Provide Device Management

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - May 11, 2005 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced Openwave® Mobile Device Manager (MDM) is fully compatible and interoperable with the Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 software platform. The collaboration between Openwave and Microsoft marks Openwave's entry into remote management and configuration of mobile devices for the enterprise. Openwave MDM is fully OMA standards compliant with commercial installations that service over 50 million handsets worldwide.

The robust advancements made to Windows Mobile 5.0 have been tested and are supported by the handset configuration application of Openwave MDM. This aspect of MDM helps set user preferences along with security and application settings on Windows Mobile 5.0-based Smartphones. This allows the phones to be managed over-the-air without service disruptions or the need for manual configuration.

“Openwave MDM enhances the device-user experience by providing four applications that help manage and configure device settings,” said Rich Wong, vice president and general manager at Openwave Systems. “Openwave MDM is now compatible with Windows Mobile 5.0 to enable over-the-air management of its features such as the configuration of personal information management settings, email, and device security policies and certificates.”

Openwave MDM supports four applications:
  • Firmware Updates (FOTA)—This helps operators avoid the high cost of recalled handsets and service disruptions that result from critical phone software defects.
  • Handset Configuration—Over-the-air handset configuration increases service adoption and usage by eliminating error prone manual procedures for setting up and activating data services.
  • Device Diagnostics—This feature improves service quality and availability by enabling handsets to report issues thereby decreasing the time required to identify and resolve malfunctions in either the handset or the network
  • User Data Management—Data management enables operators to back up and restore, transfer, or synchronize personal information that resides on users' handsets.
