  OPENWAVE RELEASES OPENWAVE MOBILE BROWSER SUPPORTING THE KDDI COMMON PLATFORM
 

  au to Release New Toshiba and Sanyo WIN Handsets
 
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - June 20, 2005 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced availability of a version of its Openwave® Mobile Browser*1 for the KDDI Common Platform*2—used in the mobile handsets of KDDI Corporation. Toshiba Corporation and Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd. will be the first manufacturers to release au WIN mobile handsets incorporating this release of the Openwave Mobile Browser soon.

The mobile browser's advanced customization capabilities have contributed to Openwave's success in the Japanese market. The KDDI Common Platform is a mobile-device software platform for WIN handsets and is based on BREW® technology developed by Qualcomm Inc. This common development platform contributes to software portability to different device makes and models, reducing integration costs, shortening development lead times, and improving quality. Now Openwave Systems has ported its Openwave Mobile Browser-already used as the standard browser for KDDI's EZweb services-to the KDDI Common Platform.

The KDDI Common Platform is based on Qualcomm Inc.'s BREW technology and is designed to facilitate efficient development of applications to be used on mobile devices manufactured for KDDI. KDDI Common Platform is the result of extensive cooperation between KDDI and application vendors and helps to minimize the need to compensate for device-specific environmental differences when writing software for KDDI handsets with its common support for core applications (such as downloaders and browsers) as well as compatibility with OEM vendors' own applications.
