  OPENWAVE EXPANDS EMEA OPERATIONS WITH VODACOM WIN
 

  Openwave To Manage And Maintain Vodacom's MMS Messaging And WAP Infrastructure
 
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - August 23, 2005 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced that it has signed a three-year managed services deal with Vodacom, South Africa's leading mobile operator.

Under the terms of the agreement Openwave will take over management and maintenance of the Openwave® Mobile Access Gateway (MAG), Multimedia Messaging Services Center (MMSC) and Location Based Services platform in the Vodacom network.

"Following the introduction of Vodafone Live! and other 3G services there has been a rapid increase in mobile data usage across South Africa. "Openwave's proven expertise and deep industry experience in developing and deploying mobile data services made it the obvious choice."

Openwave's managed services deal encompasses management and maintenance of two of Openwave's flagship products, the Openwave MMSC and MAG.

Openwave MMSC enables operators to rapidly launch and continuously offer highly differentiated and successful MMS services including those with rich audio and video content that drive significant revenue in the 3G world. This mobile messaging infrastructure from Openwave fully supports the Vodafone Live! program providing a sophisticated end-user experience to the Vodacom subscriber base.

Openwave MAG is the most established, interoperable and standards-compliant WAP gateway supporting all new WAP handsets entering the market. Openwave MAG is already part of the infrastructure at more than 70 communication service providers representing more than 40 million subscribers around the world.
