  OPENWAVE EMPOWERS OPERATORS WITH MIDAS

Development and deployment of mobile applications to be dramatically accelerated by new scripted application environment for mobile devices

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - November 9, 2005 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the leading provider of open software products and services for the communications industry, today announced the launch of the Openwave® Mobile Integrated Dynamic Application System (MIDAS), a next-generation scripted application environment designed to enable mobile operators to quickly create, customize and deploy powerful new applications and interfaces to mass market mobile devices.

For the first time ever, mobile content developers and internet engineers will have access to a framework that presents a quicker and more cost effective route to deployment than heavyweight development tools such as C++. MIDAS will dramatically reduce time to market for mobile services enabling operators to better reach consumer groups with highly targeted and customized applications.

The flexible application framework which MIDAS delivers will give operators a new level of control over innovative new user experiences. The scripted runtime will enable local applications to interact with networked content as well as core embedded device resources such as messaging stacks, storage, multimedia codecs and the phone idle screen. It will also enable seamless integration within end-to-end service solutions such as music, messaging and gaming.

“Currently it can take up to two years for a new mobile application to reach the consumer, making each and every application a big bet – especially as that application then has to be embedded on a brand new phone,” said Rich Wong, senior vice president, products solutions group, Openwave. “With MIDAS, a new application can be conceived, created and in the hands of the consumer in just 12 weeks, allowing much greater scope and flexibility for creating innovative new data services.”

“MIDAS gives operators the freedom to cost-effectively experiment with dynamic new applications, to quickly get those applications into the mass market, and by so doing more efficiently target niche groups of consumers. MIDAS addresses a significant industry pain-point, and gives operators a competitive edge to boost revenue from data services,” added Wong.

New ‘push cast’ capabilities included with MIDAS allow news, sports, music, and other content to be delivered directly to the users’ phone – even when the handset is idle. Furthermore, whole new applications and services can also be delivered to MIDAS phones, enabling operators to update devices already in the market. New services pushed to a handset will appear as a native application on the device.

MIDAS provides a common platform that allows handset manufacturers to flexibly mix and match features and interfaces to deliver devices that best meet operator requirements. By including MIDAS on a handset, manufacturers will help operators deliver more customized service interfaces which deliver dramatic improvements in terms of responsiveness and ease of use.

The MIDAS software tool is an extension of Openwave® Phone Suite Version 7 (V7), which provides everything required to meet carrier requirements for browsing, client provisioning, download, digital rights management, multimedia messaging, email, synchronization, file management, device management, instant messaging, and mobile location. Currently, seven of the world’s top 10 handset manufacturers offer handsets running V7. These include Motorola, Samsung, Siemens, Sagem, Sharp, Sanyo and NEC.
