  OPENWAVE'S BOARD EXTENDS OFFER OF BOARD REPRESENTATION TO HARBINGER CAPITAL
  

  REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - January 16, 2007 -- Openwave Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: OPWV), the leading provider of independent software products and services for the communications industry, today announced that its Board of Directors has extended the offer of a seat on the Openwave Board to Mr. James L. Zucco, one of Harbinger Capital Partners' director nominees.

Over the weekend of January 13-15, 2007, members of Openwave's Board, including its non-executive Chairman, Bernard Puckett and members of Openwave's management team held several conversations with Harbinger and its two director nominees. The Board seat offered would provide Harbinger with representation greater than its current ownership in the Company. Harbinger currently owns, in aggregate, approximately 10 million shares of Openwave common stock, or approximately 10.6% of the outstanding shares of Openwave. To date, Harbinger has not agreed to resolve the proxy contest on these terms.

Openwave's Annual Meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 17, 2007, at 8:30 a.m. PST at the Company's headquarters located at 2100 Seaport Boulevard, Redwood City, CA 94063. Stockholders of record as of November 27, 2006 are entitled to vote at the Annual Meeting.
