  Openwave® OpenMedia

Openwave OpenMedia improves web usability, increasing traffic and customer satisfaction by converting objects like MS Office documents and audio/video clips to a format suitable for mass-market handsets.

Most websites are designed for the PC, a device with a large screen, fast processing speeds and additional software packages to handle specialized objects. More often than not, the content found on the web today is unsuitable for browsing on most mobile handsets. With OpenMedia these previously unreadable objects are presented simply and intuitively, as a web page, an image, an appropriately resized media file or a stream. Users get the content they want no matter what the format.

Extending OpenMedia

OpenMedia is part of Openwave's Mobile Internet Suite of products which includes OpenWeb and OpenStream. The entire suite is optimized to work together: OpenWeb opens and adapts PC web pages; OpenMedia then extracts the object files before passing these over to OpenStream to stream them to a device via RTSP.

When a proprietary file is identified in a web page, it is converted to an OpenWeb link which references the OpenMedia platform. If a user chooses to access the object it is sent to OpenMedia which responds in a number of ways:
  • OpenMedia serves up the file as a web page, tuned to the individual device by OpenWeb
  • OpenMedia serves up a static or animated image
  • OpenMedia serves up a menu of choices for rich media files:
    • Download a 3GPP adapted and shortened version
    • Download the original
    • Stream the file
OpenMedia's functionality allows users to choose how they want to experience rich media files.

OpenMedia Security

OpenMedia protects converted files that were retrieved from protected sessions. For example, a user that browses personalized web sites and webmail systems gets an encrypted user identifier applied to each file being sent for conversion so that only the original requestor can retrieve the object.
