Openwave OpenStream brings streaming and progressive downloading to mobile devices by providing real-time stream adaptation, so that the user experience is tailored to device capabilities and operator requirements.
Streaming media files to mobile users is an effective technique to improve the immediacy of data access on limited devices. With streaming there is no delay in viewing a video file, whereas downloading a similar file over a radio network would take a considerable amount of time.
Openwave OpenStream provides two distinct services:
Enabling the streaming of static files to increase access speeds
Converting existing media streams to a mobile-friendly format in real time
OpenStream is a part of Openwave's Mobile Internet Services. They are optimized to work together: OpenWeb opens and adapts PC web pages; OpenMedia extracts the object files before passing these over to OpenStream to stream them to a device via RTSP. OpenStream modifies streams to match device capabilities, enabling a broader web experience with more rich content available.
OpenStream works in cooperation with OpenMedia to manage the security of media files that are stored within secure web sessions.
OpenMedia applies an encrypted user identifier to each file being prepared so that only the original requestor can retrieve this file. This process is especially important since OpenStream will not have the original cookies or web data to secure the streamed files.
